Since I had to install both Windows and Ubuntu from scratch, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to compare the two operating systems’ basic installation procedures. Thus, I tracked the time it took to carry out all installation tasks for both operating systems, and report the results below.

Building on top of the success of nUbuntu, the popular security Linux LiveCD based upon Ubuntu Linux, has been updated to Ubuntu 6.06 and is available for download with updated packages as well.

As you’ve learned in previous installments of this ongoing series (tutorial 1, tutorial 2, tutorial 3, tutorial 4), the Google Maps API provides an amazingly capable solution for building compelling spatial applications. Yet one of the glaring omissions from the API has been the ability to map locations without the use of third-party solutions for converting mailing addresses to their corresponding coordinates; just as is the case with the Yahoo! and Microsoft Virtual Earth mapping APIs locations can only be pinpointed using their latitudinal and longitudinal descriptors. Whereas the latter two solutions have offered built-in conversion capabilities for some time, Google Maps API users have had to rely on services such as geocoder.us or the US Census Bureau TIGER/Line data for such tasks.

Lets say you are updating your website completely, changing the names of page’s filenames (ex: file.html to file.php) and so on, this is great, you should stay updated! But what if you want to get rid of those old pages without having to worry about those who go to the old web page and see nothing? It doesnt end there either, other visitors do include major search engines such as MSN, Google and Yahoo! If people are finding your old pages when querying in these search engines, and they attempt to go to that page that has been deleted or moved, they will get a “404 File Not Found” Error! Now i know you dont want that, no webmaster wants that!

A private security company has found a way to nuke the controversial callback component in Microsoft’s Windows Genuine Advantage anti-piracy tool.
Firewall Leak Tester, a company that provides tools to test the quality of personal firewall software, has released a utility called RemoveWGA that blocks Microsoft from “phoning home” from Windows PCs on a daily basis.

This past Saturday, June 17th, saw the arrival of the latest stable version of the Linux kernel: Linux 2.6.17.
While this new kernel doesn’t boast any earth-shaking additions, it does include numerous improvements to Linux for both users and developers.

OK, you have Linux on your computer. Maybe you had some trouble getting it installed and everything working (probably wifi if I had to guess, or a winmodem), but you are past all that, everything is working, and you are ready to start using the computer. Old habits die hard, so hopefully this list helps you get over them.
