In this tutorial I will describe how to install and configure mod_deflate on an Apache2 web server. mod_deflate allows Apache2 to compress files and deliver them to clients (e.g. browsers) that can handle compressed content which most modern browsers do. With mod_deflate, you can compress HTML, text or XML files to approx. 20 - 30% of their original sizes, thus saving you server traffic and making your modem users happier.

At first glance, Netcraft’s June 2006 Web server survey looks like bad news for Apache. And, since the vast majority of all instances of Apache run on Linux, bad news for Linux in one of its strongholds: Internet servers. A closer look, though, reveals a different story.

Today, Microsoft will make Windows Vista Beta 2 available to the masses for downloading in three different languages. If you can’t download you don’t have to worry, there will be also an option to order it on DVD media later my informant told me. The released build number will be 5384.4, same as the technical beta. Today is a big step forward to let the end-user have a look at Microsoft’s upcoming operating system and of course to let them tryout all new features.

Love it, hate it, heard lots about it, but still don’t have enough of a handle to form a firm opinion? Then we must be talking about Linux, the open-source operating system that’s alluring because it’s heavy duty and it’s free. Simultaneously, it’s intimidating to newbies because it’s typically more difficult to install and configure than Windows.

We recently got hired by a credit union to assess the security of its network. The client asked that we really push hard on the social engineering button. In the past, they’d had problems with employees sharing passwords and giving up information easily. Leveraging our effort in the report was a way to drive the message home to the employees.

As Ajax is developing, different “parties” are forming in their development methods. Some developers prefer to stick with the smaller libraries they know and create their apps there, while others are looking to big players, like Microsoft’s Atlas, to provide them with powerful environments to create next-generation applications.
