The code, which was posted on the Internet early Sunday morning, could be used to disable the Windows Firewall on a fully patched Windows XP PC that was running Windows’ Internet Connection Service (ICS). This service allows Windows users to essentially turn their PC into a router and share their Internet connection with other computers on the local area network (LAN.) It is typically used by home and small-business users.

Since it’s inception in 1995, SSH has become the most widespread remote login protocol for Linux boxes, with some estimates saying that there were at least 2 million SSH users at the end of 2000. Gone are the days of telnet sending your data in plaintext over untrusted networks. Now you can type with a reasonable amount of confidence that your data is encrypted and secure.

I love a good DVD as much as the next guy, but the whole optical media world has been on my shitlist lately. I’m sick of renting or Netflix-ing a DVD, getting an hour into it, then hitting the scratchety-skip zone that freezes up my DVD player and leaves me unable to finish my stories.

BlueTie released a very nice hosted Ajax email suite last week. This is a polished product - the company has been in business since 1999 and has hundreds of partners, like ISPs, that already distribute this software to their customers. The new product is a customer-facing email solution, with both a free and premium version.

One of the biggest turn offs people have when trying to build their own PVR is that things can get complicated quickly, especially if you use a Linux based software solution. Heck, even for the seasoned PVR builders amongst us, we know that configuring everything just right can be a huge hassle and time sink.

This was !!KILLING ME!!! after my upgrade to FF2.0 I needed my old’skool style tab close button back.
For some strange reason Mozilla has decided to put close buttons on each tab in their Firefox 2.0 release for conformity with other browsers or something. In the beta2 release, you could not change the position of these or remove them, which stopped me from upgrading from Firefox 1.5.
